Conor McGregor will not be fighting at UFC 200 as originally booked.
The rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz is officially off. Dana White announced this news at today's UFC 200 press conference in Las Vegas.
The UFC brass still has to find an opponent for the younger Diaz but said that a title fight is likely to headline the marquee event instead. Interestingly Diaz said that it wasn't because he wasn't willing to fight.
"I came to fight Conor McGregor and I don't really have any, too much interest in fighting anybody else." he said when asked if he had another opponent he'd like to fight. Understandably the McGregor fight is the largest money fight and would keep Nate Diaz in the main event. Even if he finds another opponent and accepts that fight he would make less money as a non-main event contest. "That's what he wanted and I'm down for whatever. Like I said I came here to fight if we're gonna get that fight going. If not I'm going on vacation, for real."
With over 160,000 retweets on his early retirement earlier this week the fight would be even bigger after the whirlwind of press coverage and fan-speculation it garnered. One would think that there is still an open avenue for the brash Irishman to make the event booking.
"I don't disagree with that," White said when asked. "But Conor will fight again. Is it fair to everybody sitting up here? I mean people came in from Poland and Brazil."
White did say they are actively working on a replacement bout but couldn't divulge any information. More news will likely come out in the near future.
